May 25, 2016 • A Link to Remember
This week’s link is NOT very useful if one is not a Don Martin fan. I am. His cartoons in Mad between 1956 and 1988 took onomatopoeia beyond the run-of-the-mill booms, cracks, and thumps and provide a unique look at the possibilities of language. This 1200-entry list, while way too large to be taken at one go (and, truth be told, a bit on the repetitive side), contains enough “fashklorks”, “gashklitzgas”, and “thugawunks” to last a lifetime. Plus the non-sound made by native Americans running through woods.
